• TOPIC: WRITE AND PASTE – Calligraphic Textures on Panels

I have a passion for textures, especially textures formed in nature. After years of learning a variety of Roman letters, I discovered the beauty of each stroke, and the unique textures that result from writing text with them. I also love working on paper. In this workshop, we will create calligraphic textures on paper, and paste them on wood panels.

In this workshop, we will mainly use folded pens that I think are the most versatile tools to make calligraphic textures. In the first class, we will practice simple random weighted letterforms with both capitals and minuscules with radius cut folded pen with Sumi ink. We will play with space, balance, movement and rhythm for making unique calligraphic textures by writing a text with random weighted letters.

In the second class, we will use colors and different mediums to add more depth on the textures. We will also challenge how much emotion we can put into our marks through the exercises. Then we will crop some textures in squares (4”x 4”, 6”x 6” or 8”x 8”) and paste them on wood panels. Layering oriental paper on the board and simple collage technique will also be presented. The design layout and composition, principal of art and design will be lectured for making the cropping pieces as calligraphic art pieces.
