“The Workshop is aimed at everyone: designers, professionals, students, graphic designers, tattoo artists, letter lovers, just curious people or anyone interested in calligraphy, both as an artistic medium and as a graphic element to complete or enrich an editorial or advertising work.

• TOPIC: ILLUMINATED LETTER
This three session workshop will cover practical applications of gilding and illuminating the highly decorated initial letter found in medieval manuscripts. You will experience exercises in ink drawing, painting the size, gold leaf application, fine filigree drawing and painting layers within the letter itself. The class is suitable for intermediate and beginner students alike. This is a marvellous workshop full of fun, learning and inspirational techniques. And, you will create a beautiful gift for a friend or a keepsake for yourself.

ease read: Some items may be hard to get locally so online ordering may be faster. You may wish to use non-genuine leaf gold as it is cheaper. As this is an online course it will be recorded so you can observe then work during the week. There will be a shared platform (Padlet) for us to use to share our work during the intervals. Gold leaf will be required by the second session.
Pens: Dip-in Pen holder and pointed nib for fine drawing
Black very fine pigmented marker size 0.05 Staedtler or CopicBrushes: a couple of very cheap short bristle brushes for mixing colour. Plus 1 x 000 or 00 short hair pointed brush
Ink: walnut or black stick ink
Gold leaf: genuine leaf gold 22ct – 23.75 transfer gold (booklets of 25 sheets can be between $60 – 80. You can purchase in single sheets if you wish. Or you can watch, take notes, wait then decide to purchase.
Gold size: we will be using contemporary brands, but traditional size will be shown and discussed. Here are some that are readily available: Ormoline by Robertson, German gilding mix such as X-Press It, Miniatum Ink (yellow) by Kholner. There are lots of others so questions will be welcome before you purchase.
Gouache & Water colours: a couple of tubes of your favourite colours, in any of these brands Winsor & Newton, Schmincke, Rowney, Pelikan, Turner. If you wish you can choose rich medieval colours: verdigris, cadmium red, ultra-marine & purples were used.
Palette: a series of very small mixing containers, white ceramic sauce dishes are great.
Papers: 1 x 300gsm Arches hot-press paper recommended or something similar in the smooth watercolour range. Can be 180gsm. We will work on good quality paper, but vellum will be discussed.
Eraser: soft white pencil eraser.
Ruler: a 300mm long see-through plastic ruler plus a clear smaller ruler about 200mm.
Pencils: 1 X “H” lead pencil
1 X Mechanical Pencil … any pacer typeAlso add notebook or visual diary, tissues or rag, notebook, blu-tac, usual supplies
Books: any related books you already have for discussion. Water Jar: medium size (to stand pens in).
• THE TEACHER:
Gemma Black is an artist and calligraphic-designer. Gemma was a recipient of a Winston Churchill Memorial Fellowship to study in Europe that allowed her to research, observe and learn the practice of calligraphy. She is an Honoured Fellow and Fellow of the prestigious Calligraphy & Lettering Arts Society, UK. For over 25 years Gemma has taught extensively for calligraphy, bookbinding, art & craft organisations around Australia including the Australian National University. Gemma has taught in Italy, Germany, Spain, South Africa, USA, Canada and the UK. Her work is housed in private and public collections including the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, UK, the European Parliament and Parliament House Canberra. Her work involves mostly calligraphy, book structures, decorative paper techniques, abstract watercolour painting and grounds for calligraphy.
