“The workshop is aimed at everyone: designers, professionals, students, graphic designers, tattoo artists, letter lovers, just curious people or anyone interested in calligraphy, both as an artistic medium and as a graphic element to complete or enrich an editorial or advertising work.

• REQUIREMENTS:
To be part of the classe no previous specific knowledge is required, only the interest and desire to explore the world of letters.
• TOPIC DAY 1:
Adolf Bernd Calligraphic Painting Technique
Friday 24th July 2020 10:00 am – 12:00 noon Rome time
In this two hour painting demonstration with handouts I will explore with you the painting technique developed by Adolf Bernd. I will discuss his colour palette and it’s appropriateness to a piece of work. You will watch me create a small example using this technique. Adolf Bernd’s calligraphic paintings are an amazing use of watercolour, and very attractive to the eye.

Materials: no need to purchase anything expensive use what you have, you can work with the tutor or take notes only
- A4 cold press watercolour paper 180gsm to 300gsm 2 sheets or off-cuts
- practice paper or cartridge paper
- small sheets of A4 tracing film/paper
- a variety of water colours of your choice – mixed ready to use in small palette or white mixing dishes (like tiny Chinese dipping dishes) or ice cube trays.
- A clear ruler 300mm or smaller
- lead pencil HB or F. Highly recommended .5 mechanical pencil
- short round sable or imitation paint brushes sizes 000 or 00 and a small flat-edge brush no larger than 10 (about 1/4”)
- A couple of cheap China bristle brushes for mixing
- small water jar rag etc.
- visual diary for note taking
• TOPIC DAY 2:
Pen Lettering of the Art Deco Period
Saturday 25th July 2020 10:00 am – 12:00 noon Rome time
In this two hour pen demonstration with handouts we will take a look at the pen lettering samples from the Art Deco movement of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. This pen & ink and pencil demonstration will see a variety of styles and perhaps a motif or two, executed from that great period d’Arte Decorativa! You can follow and work with me in pencil or pen or just take notes. We will explore pen styles that were prominent in both poster and book-cover designs.

- Some Round-end nibs such as the Speedball B Series or Flicker B Series. Brause & Mitchell also make these nibs. Medium to small round sizes.
- Some cartridge, drawing or practice paper a few sheets (A4)
- A clear ruler 300mm or more
- Ink stick with grinding stone or a bottle of black or walnut non-waterproof ink
- Lead pencil HB or F. Highly recommended .5 mechanical pencil
- 7 to 21 words from a poem, quote or prose from late 1880’s to 1930’s. May I suggest words from a leading decorative arts figure in your own country

• THE TEACHER:
Gemma Black is an artist and calligraphic-designer. Gemma was a recipient of a Winston Churchill Memorial Fellowship to study in Europe that allowed her to research, observe and learn the practice of calligraphy. She is an Honoured Fellow and Fellow of the prestigious Calligraphy & Lettering Arts Society, UK. For over 25 years Gemma has taught extensively for calligraphy, bookbinding, art & craft organisations around Australia including the Australian National University. Gemma has taught in Italy, Germany, Spain, South Africa, USA, Canada and the UK. Her work is housed in private and public collections including the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, UK, the European Parliament and Parliament House Canberra. Her work involves mostly calligraphy, book structures, decorative paper techniques, abstract watercolour painting and grounds for calligraphy.
