• TOPIC: Italic beyond the dogma

Italic is probably the most versatile of all the writing styles. It has its roots in the Carolingian minuscule and gothic handwriting styles, but we can also see some of its characteristics in earlier scripts.
We start out with a set of basic principles and rules of thumb. The rules will have many exceptions. Even a well made formal italic hand will include rotation of pen angle and other means of bringing life and vitality  to the letters. So ‘beyond the dogma’ implies that we need to intelligently and sensibly questions, inspect and investigate what characterises a good italic hand, rather than accept rules as everlasting. Movement is essential to italic, and has its own dynamic, affecting the italic hand.
I will be showing historical samples and contemporary calligraphy as well as my own work. There will be demonstrations on paper of both formal and informal italic, and advanced techniques, such as pen rotation, retouching/building up and pressure variation will be demonstrated.
